> Answer Engine Optimisation is the work of winning the direct answer slot: AI Overviews, featured snippets and voice results. It means answering each question in 40 to 60 words directly under a matching heading.

## The answer box is the new first position

Answer Engine Optimisation is the narrow, practical discipline of winning the direct response: the AI Overview, the featured snippet, the voice assistant reply, the panel that appears above everything else. It is not a rebrand of SEO. It targets a specific slot with its own rules.

Those rules are unusually mechanical. Answer engines prefer content that states a claim in one or two sentences, immediately after a heading that matches the question. They prefer defined lists and tables to prose. They prefer pages where the answer is not surrounded by sales copy. Most business websites are written the exact opposite way.

## Where this works best

AEO pays off fastest on questions with a factual answer: what something costs, how long it takes, whether you cover a particular area, what the difference is between two options, whether a treatment hurts. If your customers ask those questions before they buy, and they almost certainly do, each one is a slot you can own.

It works less well on questions that are purely subjective or where the engine prefers a marketplace or directory. Part of the audit is telling you which of your questions are winnable and which are not worth the effort.

## What the work involves

A question map first, then the rewriting, then the markup.

### Build the question map

We pull the real questions from Google autocomplete, People Also Ask, your own site search, the questions your team answers on the phone, and the language in your reviews. Reviews are the most underused source here, because customers describe your service in the words other customers will search.

### Rewrite for extraction

Each target question gets a heading that matches how it is asked, followed immediately by a forty to sixty word answer that makes sense with no surrounding context. Supporting detail goes below. This single change wins more snippets than anything else we do.

### Structure the data

FAQ, HowTo, Product and Service schema where it genuinely applies, validated and kept in sync with the visible content. Markup that disagrees with the page does more harm than no markup at all.

### Formatting for the slot

Comparison tables, definition lists and numbered steps where the question calls for them. Answer engines lift these almost verbatim, which makes format a ranking decision rather than a design preference.

### Track and defend

Snippets are lost as easily as they are won. We monitor each target question monthly and rework the answer when a competitor takes the slot.

## A worked example

A dental practice ranking fourth for a treatment query has a page opening with two paragraphs about the practice history. The question the searcher asked, what the treatment costs, is answered in paragraph six, inside a sentence that begins with the word it. No engine can lift that. Moving a plain costed answer directly under a heading that matches the question, and adding the price range as a table, makes the same page eligible for the slot without a single new backlink.

## Questions

How is this different from your AI SEO service?AI SEO is the broad programme covering technical health, entity consistency and citation across assistants. AEO is one focused part of it aimed at the answer slot. If you only have budget for one, and your customers ask factual questions before buying, AEO usually pays back sooner.

Will winning a snippet cost me clicks?Sometimes, yes. If the whole answer is shown, some people will not click. For local services this is usually still worth it, because being the named source drives the call even when the visit never happens. We track calls and enquiries, not just sessions, for that reason.

Do I need new pages?Usually not many. Most of the work is restructuring pages you already have. New pages come later, and only where a real question has no home on your site.
